No two films are exactly alike and likewise, no two film productions are exactly the same either. That said, for the purposes of this guide we can break down production types into four broad categories, feature film vs short film, and narrative vs documentary. Looking at it from this overview perspective will help to define the budget and scope of any project.

As stated previously this guide is primarily focused on feature film production. But understanding how that format relates to productions can be useful. Furthermore, most other forms of filmmaking share many similarities and can often be a simplified version of the feature film process.

Let’s start with a look into the differences between the feature film and the short film.
